Toughened Glass Roofing

An open terrace in the Kathmandu Valley is unusable for a good part of the year — too hot before the monsoon, too wet during it. A glass roof on a steel frame turns that same space into somewhere you actually sit, without losing the daylight that made the terrace pleasant in the first place. Done properly it is one of the cheapest ways to add usable area to a house.

Toughened glass, and why it matters

Roof glazing must be toughened. Toughened glass is heat-treated so that if it ever does break it crumbles into blunt granules instead of falling as blades — which is the entire safety argument for using it above people's heads. It is also several times stronger than ordinary glass against impact and thermal stress. We do not fit ordinary float glass overhead at any price.

Falls, drainage and monsoon

The commonest failure in glass roofing here is not the glass — it is water. A roof laid too flat holds water, and standing water finds every weak joint. We set a proper fall so rain runs off, route it to a gutter and downpipe rather than letting it sheet onto a neighbour's wall, and seal the glass-to-frame joints with structural-grade silicone rather than a general purpose sealant.

Heat, and how to control it

Clear glass lets in light and heat together. Before the monsoon a fully glazed terrace facing west can get uncomfortably hot. Options are reflective or tinted glass, a partial solid roof over the seating area with glass elsewhere, or openable side panels for cross ventilation. We will raise this at the site visit rather than let you discover it in Jestha.

Where we work

We work across Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur, and our own workshop and office are in Madhyapur Thimi-1, Lokanthali, Bhaktapur — so most sites in the valley are a short drive away and our team can be on site the same week.

Frequently asked questions

Will hail or a falling branch break it?

Toughened glass of the right thickness handles normal hail and small debris. Nothing is unbreakable — but if it does break it granulates rather than falling in sharp pieces, and a single panel can be replaced without dismantling the whole roof.

Does it leak in heavy monsoon rain?

It should not, and if it does the cause is almost always fall or sealing rather than the glass. We set the slope so water cannot stand, use structural silicone at the joints and take the runoff into a gutter. Where a roof abuts an existing wall we flash the junction rather than relying on sealant alone.

How much does a glass roof cost?

It depends on area, glass thickness and type, and how much steel the span needs — a small balcony cover and a full terrace roof are very different jobs. We measure on site and give an itemised quotation separating steel, glass and sealing so you can see what is driving the price.
