Most window replacements in the Kathmandu Valley come down to the same three complaints: dust, noise, and frames that have warped or rusted. Timber swells and shrinks with the monsoon until the sash no longer closes, and older aluminium sections seal poorly and conduct cold straight into the room. UPVC solves all three, provided the profile is decent and the installation is square.
Dust and noise, honestly explained
A well-fitted UPVC window with good gaskets will cut roadside dust dramatically — this is the single biggest reason people in Kathmandu change their windows. Noise is more nuanced: a single glazed UPVC unit reduces noise noticeably compared with an ill-fitting timber frame, but if you live on a busy road and want a serious reduction you want double glazing. Anyone promising silence from single glazing is overselling.
Profile, reinforcement and hardware
The visible plastic is only part of the window. Larger frames need galvanised steel reinforcement inside the profile or they flex and eventually fail to seal. Hardware — hinges, rollers, locks — is what you touch every day and what fails first if it is cheap. When we quote we tell you which profile and which hardware, so you can compare like with like against another quotation instead of comparing a number.
Measuring and installation
Old openings in valley houses are rarely square, especially in brick-and-mud construction. We measure every opening individually rather than assuming a standard size, fabricate to those measurements, and pack and seal the perimeter properly on installation. A good window fitted badly leaks dust exactly like the old one did, which is why we do not sell frames for someone else to fit.

How long do UPVC windows last in Nepal?
A decent profile with UV-stabilised material and steel reinforcement should last well over twenty years in valley conditions, with no painting and no rust. Hardware may need adjusting or replacing sooner than the frame, which is normal and inexpensive.
Is UPVC better than aluminium?
For sealing and thermal performance in a home, generally yes — UPVC does not conduct heat and cold the way aluminium does, and gaskets seal better against dust. Aluminium still wins for very large spans and for commercial shopfronts where slim sightlines matter. We fit both and will say which suits your opening.
Do I have to break the wall to fit UPVC?
Usually not much. In most cases the old frame is removed and the new one fitted into the existing opening with minimal cutting, then made good and sealed. Heavy breaking is only needed if the opening size is being changed or the old frame is built deep into the masonry.
